  ABOUT DEHRADUN
   
 
Nestled in the mountain ranges of the Himalayas, Dehradun is one of the oldest cities of India. Also known as the "abode of Sage Drona", Dehradun has always been an important center of Garhwal rulers which was conquered by the British. Dehradun Cantt has a string of premier educational institutes like the Forest Research Institute (FRI), Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), and the Indian Military Academy (IMA) besides a host of public schools. The headquarters of many National Institutes like ONGC, Survey of India, etc are located at the periphery.
   
 
It is a favoured tourist destination as it attracts tourists, pilgrims and enthusiasts from all walks of life to its serene environs. Added to this is the abundance of special Basmati rice , tea and leechi garden which contribute in making the city into a paradise.
   
 

TAPKESHWAR TEMPLE

   
 

The temple is situated on the banks of a rivulet in Dehradun Cantt area. It is 5.5 kms from the city bus stand and is well connected by road. It is named Tapkeshwar as water droplets, originating from a rock, fall on the Shivling placed in the shrine. Legend has it that Guru Dronacharya's son, Ashwathama, did a tapasya to please the God Shankar for making milk available for young Ashwathama. After a difficult and strenuous tapasya the God got pleased and droplets of milk started dripping from the cave where tapasya was performed by Ashwathama. People in large numbers participate in the fair organised on the occasion of Shivratri and pay their obeisance to the deity.

   
 

ROBBER'S CAVE(GUCCHUPANI)

   
 

An ideal place for picnic, Robber's Cave is 8 Kms from the City Bus Stand adjoining Dehradun Cantt area. The last one kilometer is to be trekked to reach this beautiful cave formed by a natural rift in a mountain. Through this flows a very cold stream of water. The darkness of the cave combined with the sound of the fast flowing stream gushing past the feet gives it an ideal touch.

   
  SAHASTRADHARA
   
 

Sahastradhara is a cold sulphur water spring having high medicinal value. The Baldi river and the caves provide a breathtaking view. It is situated 14 Kms from the city bus stand, and is connected by a regular bus service and private taxis. An ideal place for family picnics.

   
  CHANDRABANI
   
 

Situated 7 Kms from Dehradun on the Dehradun-Delhi route is the famous temple of Chandrabani (Gautam Kund). According to the mythological beliefs, this spot was inhabited by Maharshi Gautam, his wife and daughter Anjani who is widely worshiped by the people. It is believed that the daughter of heaven - Ganga had manifested herself on this spot which is now popularly known as the Gautam Kund. Every year devotees, in large numbers, take a dip in this holy kund, 2 Kms away from the main road. Located amidst the Shivalik hills, the place is a beautiful tourist spot.

   
  FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE
   
 
Established  as Imperial  Forest Research Institute in 1906,  Forest Research Institute (FRI) Dehradun, is a premier institution under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE). Styled  in Greeko Roman Architecture by C.G. Blomfield, the main building   is an impressive edifice, marrying Greco-Roman and Colonial styles of architecture, with a plinth area of 2.5 hectares and is set in a lush green estate spread over 450 hectares, with the outer Himalaya forming its back drop. It is a National Heritage.  Located within the limits of Dehradun Cantonment FRI was built by the Britishers to impart forestry training in India.
   
 
The main building houses some very thought provoking museums relating to different facets of forestry and it's studies. The institute today is a premier institute for training of fresh Indian Forest Service(IFS) recruits. The Forest Research Institute, Dehradun is one of the oldest institutions of its kind and acclaimed the world over. The Institute's history is virtually synonymous with the evolution and development of scientific forestry, not only in India, but over the entire sub-continent. The Institute has a developed infrastructure of all equipped laboratories, library, herbarium, arboreta, printing press and experimental field areas for conducting forestry research, quite in keeping with the best of its kind anywhere in the world. It is 7 Kms from Clock Tower, on the Dehradun-Chakrata road which now forms a part of NH-72 and is one of the biggest forest based training institute in India. Most of the forest officers are a product of this institute. The F.R.I. with its majestic building also houses a Botanical Museum for the attraction of tourists.
   
 

This grandiose building with office and laboratory space of about 5,800 square meters and six magnificent museums covering 2,400 square meters, was inaugurated in 1929. The building is a tourist attraction and it signifies Dehradun as the forest capital of India .
