Established in 1913 to cater to municipal needs and provide civic administration to the people residing in Cantonment, Dehradun Cantonment is spread in a beautifully developed vast area measuring about 5203 acres which comprises of Private land in the civilian area of Garhi and Premnagar, Army formations and establishments like HQ Uttarakhand Subarea, Indian Military Academy, FRI, RIMC, Military Hospital, etc. Apart from these the residence of the Governor and Chief Minister of Uttarakhand is also within the Cantonment area. |

As per census 2001, the total population is 59,827.The Board functions in accordance with the Cantonment Act, 2006. The Cantonment consists of eight wards, delimitation for which has been notified recently in 2007 vide SRO No 7(E) dated 13.11.2007. Three wards namely, Ward Nos I, IV and V are reserved for women vide sro 1 (E) dated 03.01.2008 and one ward i.e Ward No III is reserved for for scheduled castes vide SRO No 7(E) dated 13.11.2007. |

Dehradun Cantonment is conveniently approachable and well connected with prominent establishments and residential localities of the city.
The NH-72 leading to other States, District Hqrs are passing through this Cantonment and have enhanced the significance of this station.
Cantonment Boards are statutorily constituted local bodies, comprising elected representatives, ex-officio and nominated members.

Presently, Brig S H Kulkarni, VSM**, Sub Area Commander, UA Sub Area, Dehradun is the President of Cantonment Board. Shri Guru Prasad Tiwari is the nominated civil member of the Cantonment Board. |

The CEO-cum-Member Secretary for the Cantonment is appointed by Central Govt. from Indian Defense Estates Services (Central Services) and presently Shri Ravi Shankar, IDES is holding the post of CEO of Dehradun Cantonment.
